Needle Festivals

Every year, on December 8th, two festivals are held to show Japanese customary appreciation for small tools, such as needles. These two Shinto festivals are the “Hari Kuyo”(Requiem Service for Broken Needles) and the “Fuigo Matsuri”(Bellow Festival).
The former is held by the owners of the needles, and the latter by the manufacturing department, to pray for the safe manufacture of needles. Needles are small tools, and in Japanese culture, it is widely regarded that the sensibility of the user is translated through the tool. For Japanese people, tools, including needles, are not just inanimate objects, and as they are used continuously to serve our specific creative purpose, a great deal of time and effort is put into their creation.
This Sewing Box was produced in response to the desire of our customers to own a sewing set that is always at hand, and that can be treasured for years to come. Needles for everyday use, and other carefully selected Japanese handcrafted items are included in these sewing sets. We wish to spread the Japanese custom of taking great care of tools to people around the world, and we hope that the enjoyment of hand sewing can be enhanced for each individual.

Paulownia Wood Box from Kyoto

Tulip has chosen hand crafted paulownia wooden boxes from Kyoto to store the tools included in this set. Compared to other types of wood, paulownia has a low specific gravity. It is also soft, grows straight, has a beautiful grain pattern, and is used to make boxes of superior quality.
In Japan, it is customary to store delicate and treasured items such as Kimono fabric and sashes, pottery and ceramics, theatrical Noh masks, Buddhist ceremonial items and Sutra scripts in a paulownia box. One feature of paulownia is that it naturally releases humidity, allowing items stored for a long period to breathe. That is why it is often called the living wood.

Hand Painting

Every box was hand painted in Kyoto by artists specializing in Japanese traditional designs, such as can be found on Kimono sashes, folding fans, Buddhist painting, and paulownia wood boxes.

U-shaped Scissors produced in Banshu

U-shaped Scissors produced in Banshu

Scissors are an essential item for sewing. The scissors included with these sets are U-shaped. These traditional Japanese scissors are simple to use and allow you to cut threads quickly by simply squeezing them. More specifically, the U-shaped scissors Tulip has chosen for this set are from the Banshu region of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, noted for its high-quality scissors and knives. Historians say that this traditional local industry started in 1790. Still today, skilled craftsmen make each piece by hand. Scissors from Banshu cut amazingly well. With the beauty of a refined tool, this excellent product is one that Japan can so rightly be proud of. These easy-to-use scissors will increase the comfort of your sewing time.

Bamboo Rulers

Bamboo rulers are a traditional Japanese instrument for taking accurate measurements. Bamboo grows straight and true, will not bend easily, is resistant to changes in temperature and humidity, and can be used efficiently for a long, long time.

Kimono Fabric Reborn

The scissor cases, thread spools, needle threader grips and pincushions are all made from Kimono that are no longer being worn. Silk Kimono fabric has been transformed into each unique hand sewing item in this set.
Each Kimono is made one by one, wishing for the happiness of the people who wear them, and is designed in accordance with the Japanese sense of beauty, which is inspired by nature, and the changing of the seasons.
Please look forward to opening your Sewing Box to see which beautiful pattern has been selected for you!
